Interpreting demands a highly specific skill set. That the interpreter must have a superb knowledge of the languages involved and the terminology specific to a given field is, of course, a sine qua non. However, equally as essential are exceptional concentration, the ability to stay calm in highly stressful situations, excellent manners, sharp reflexes and… a sense of humour, which can be very useful as a means of diffusing tension during especially thorny commercial negotiations, for instance. We carry out:
- Consecutive interpreting: with this kind of interpreting, the speaker pauses after a few sentences and gives the interpreter time to repeat what has been said in the target language. Depending upon the nature of the meeting and the requirements of the participants, the interpreter may take notes as the speaker is talking and then either convey a condensed version of the crucial information or a fully detailed reproduction of everything that was said. Consecutive interpreting is what is needed during business meetings, negotiations, training and press conferences.
- Simultaneous interpreting: the most challenging form of interpreting. This is work which can only be carried out by the very best, the masters of their profession. Simultaneous interpreting is required during international congresses, symposia and seminars. It always involves two interpreters. They work in soundproofed booths and translate ‘live’, talking at the same time as the speaker. The participants in the event are equipped with special receivers and headsets which allow them to listen to the interpreter speaking in their own language. Simultaneous interpreting thus demands the right equipment and sound system. We offer our clients a choice; you can simply commission the services of our interpreters or, if required, you can also hire the necessary equipment from us, along with its installation and the provision of technical support during your event.
- Whispered interpreting: rather like simultaneous interpreting, here, too, the interpreter provides a ‘live’ translation, talking concurrently with the speaker, but with no specialised equipment. Whispered interpreting is carried out for small groups of two to three people. The interpreter sits beside their listeners and conveys the substance of what the speaker is saying at a whisper. This kind of interpreting is worth choosing when a large-scale conference or symposium is being organised but there will only be a handful of foreign-language speakers who are unfamiliar with speakers’ language and there is thus no need to hire the equipment demanded for simultaneous interpreting.
- Escort interpreting: also referred to as ‘liaison interpreting’; this type of interpreting comes into play for foreign trips, delegations and visits. It is a kind of consecutive interpreting, during which the interpreter becomes the organisers’ ‘right hand’, providing the visiting group with assistance in communicating with waiters, registering and settling into their hotel and so forth.
- Sworn interpreting: this is necessary wherever and whenever there is a requirement for the interpreting to have legal validity. It is used, for example, during partners’ and shareholders’ meetings, at the signing of notarial deeds, in dealing with official administrative bodies and formalities, during court proceedings, when giving statements to the police and public prosecutor and so forth. It is carried out by sworn interpreters who hold the appropriate authorisation issued by the Minister of Justice.
Good interpreters usually have a tight schedule, so it is advisable to order an interpreting service in good advance.
